Yaks (also known as the ships of the snow mountain) are large, long-haired, horned mammals that live in mountainous Tibet. Yaks are easier to raise than cattle and are very intelligent. Just like people they have many different personalities. These sure-footed cattle were domesticated thousands of years ago by people in Asia. Yaks can climb up to 20,000 feet above sea level. The yak is 3 to 6 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh from 400 to 1,800 pounds. Both males and females have horns, and have a lifespan of about 20 years in captivity. The Tibetan people are very dependent on their yak herds to support their livelihood. They use all of the yak for different items, including the horns. They even burn the dung for fuel. Yaks are still used as beasts of burden in areas where trucks aren’t practical.
